Periodically I will come across an invoice where the total listed is different than the payment total amount. In these situations, it is always related to a single line item on the invoice not being included in the payment total. This is not due to the clerk trying to split the transaction between multiple payment types. After the fact when I inquire of the clerk he/she is never able to tell me how or why this has happened.
