Base3 Development Timeline

I realize Base3 is still in Beta and not yet ready for development, but I have clients interested in redesigning their websites (and of course, they’d prefer sooner to later as clients do ) and I’d hate to design in Base2 at this stage.

Has anyone else had this come up already? Developers/designers/agency owners… what kind of conversations have you had? And Vin65 Team, how is the launch date looking?

Although Base3 is in beta, technically you can launch a site on Base3. There are a few tags that aren’t fully completed yet, but all of the core tools (so someone can buy wine online) are complete.

That being said, migrating from Base2 to Base3 is a fairly simple process as well if you decide to go the Base2 route.

@Lindsay We’ve been working with Base3 on a few developments and a Sandbox and are hoping to launch some websites soon. Although, we haven’t set launch dates yet. We started early using Base3 and hit quite a few bugs at first. Admittedly, we were building and trying things out before the development team had finished with the core items.

I’d like to hear more about the process for migrating from Base2 to Base3 that @Brent is mentioning. This must be something coming in the future for migrating Base2 templates to another Base3 template? From what I understand, if you have a custom developed Vin65 website on Base2, it will have to be completely redeveloped again using Base3 tags. It might be a simple process to migrate but there’s work for the designer/developer to complete before the migration can happen. Unless there are some tools coming to make this quicker.

Thanks @Brent, I’d prefer to code once, if possible! Plus there are goodies in Base3 that Base2 doesn’t offer, so I’d prefer to bake those in from the beginning for the client.

@JamesDavenport I’d like to hear about the migration process as well. TBH I’m a little nervous about all this talk about how easy the migration is… I don’t want to surprise any winery clients with more more time spent than they were expecting, eg:

@Lindsay - I’d suggest that you get setup with a Base3 designer sandbox site to play around in to see if the beta would fit your client’s needs (sandbox sites are free). From there you could either pick the base3 option for your client or go with base2.

Thanks Brent, this is actually my Base3 sandbox site account
I’m an early-adopter by nature, so at this point for me there’s no going back!

Bump.

How’s this whole thing going?

@EdFarmCollective - So far so good. Getting lots of good feedback during the designer beta period. There are still a few more things we want to get solidifies before the ‘beta’ tag gets removed. There are a few clients that are close to launching with base3 and we’ll post them here when they are live.

Brent,

Where are we on Base 3? Definitely interested in seeing the fully functional tools this has to offer being that it was announced about a year ago.

Just wondering if Development Timeline was updated. We haven’t seen a whole lot of developments on this or really any of the other “big” changes to the platform.

@shh - We’ve learned a lot during the Base3 designer beta phase and the client beta phase. Based on what we’ve learned, we’ve been really busy working on some key features and bringing that to all clients so that there is no design migration needed. It’s not ready for clients yet, but it’s actively being worked on.

Does that mean that any Base2 designs can be easily migrated to Base3 if/when it should come out of Beta?

@EdFarmCollective - We’ll be sending out communications on “what this means” to all clients closer to when the development is all wrapped up.

Is there a rough timeline for that? I only ask because if one of your clients is budgeting to redevelop their websites at all this year, it would be valuable to know whether a Base2 design can be migrated easily to Base3 or if they should wait entirely.

Kind of goes back to a transparency report. We need some foresight to make the best strategic decisions for our wineries.

@EdFarmCollective - Clients should not wait to redesign their websites. There will be no fee for clients to use the new checkout UI once it’s complete. If your designer has gone against ecommerce best practices in the cart, checkout, etc. pages, we cannot guarantee that their design mods would work with the new checkout UI. If you or your designer is curious about that the new checkout tools look like, feel free to check in with @SarahBarwin
